The spring session of the Galician Sejm in 1866 was very intense for the Ukrainian faction. Especially since then the issue of language was resolved. The first bills` projects on the language of the Galician Autonomy were received in November 1865. Now the situation has worsened. Count Leszek Borkowski declared: just in Polish, that`s it! Suddenly Count Agenor Goluhowski took the floor. “I think,” he said, “it is right for us to make this concession on our part (perhaps I am not speaking the best), because in my opinion, the Ruthenians have the right to demand that their language be respected.” The Poles were shocked! Nevertheless, after the break, the majority politely voted for Goluhowski’s proposals: 79 votes in favor, 29 against. Thus the Ukrainian language received legal official status in Galicia. It was on April 27, 1866.
